Elder is a brittle wood with a light blonde or tan color and the unusual characteristic of growing a kind of marrow on the interior rather than forming rings. This makes it seem more like bone and less like a tree. It also makes the wood very brittle, and impossible to turn on a lathe.

 

History & Lore:

 

Elder originally comes from the UK and grows wild in a few places in North America. Elder bushes bear a tart, tannic berry that contains cyanide. Elder wood is very difficult to work with since it is so brittle. It is named “The Crone” based upon its association with the archetypal third aspect of the Goddess. The Crone lives in the service of others, helping them pass through the trials of life. Elder wood is associated with death and the Underworld. Historically the dead were buried with elder branches as an offering to the Goddess for safe passage. Tradition prohibits burning elder wood as it infuriates the goddess. Planting Elder trees invites her protection. Elder is the wood of transitions; beginnings and endings. Elder is used for Exorcisms, banishment, prosperity, grief and healing.
